The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organization founded in 1997 through a partnership between the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Unilever. The MSC’s mission is to safeguard the world’s oceans by promoting sustainable fishing practices through science-based standards and an eco-label certification program.
Key activities of the MSC include:
Developing and maintaining the MSC Fisheries Standard, which assesses whether wild-capture fisheries are well-managed and sustainable;
Operating the MSC blue fish label, a globally recognized eco-label that appears on certified sustainable seafood products, enabling consumers to choose ocean-friendly options;
Collaborating with fishers, scientists, governments, retailers, and conservation groups to drive improvements in fisheries management and ensure the long-term health of marine ecosystems.
To date, more than 400 fisheries across over 70 countries have achieved MSC certification, covering key species such as cod, tuna, shrimp, and salmon. The MSC certification is widely regarded as one of the most credible and rigorous sustainability standards for wild-caught seafood worldwide.
